Romsey in Hampshire, is the Southern Gateway to the beautiful Test Valley and sits astride the river crossing at Middlebridge, a strategic staging point on the route west to the King's hunting grounds in the New Forest. For centuries it has been a traditional market town with its market charter originally held by the Abbess of Romsey Abbey. Romsey was incorporated as a borough in 1607 by a grant of King James I.  Today Romsey retains its street markets as well as a thriving town centre with shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes and historical sites. King Henry I granted Romsey its first charter. This allowed a market to be held every Sunday, and a four-day annual fair in May. In the 13th century, Henry III permitted an additional fair in October.
